Beginning on July 5, I have had the honor of being on jury duty for the Franklin County Municipal Courts. One of the cool things we can do is tour different state buildings and sit in on different courts. I jumped at the opportunity to take a tour of the Ohio State Supreme Court building and I do not regret it one bit. Here are a few things that I’ve learned…
- You do not need to be an American citizen to sit on the Supreme Court
- It is a six year term
- There are about 3 million court cases filed in Ohio and about 98% are settled out of court
- About 2,000 are requested to be accepted by the Supreme Court – must be of public interest and have two different court of appeals with different rulings on the case
- Supreme Court cases are publicized on public TV and all oral opening arguments are open to the public
- Cannot run for Supreme Court after the age of 70 but can get elected before the age of 70. If you turn 70 during your term, you cannot run for reelection
I highly recommend taking time to tour the Ohio Supreme Court and visit the visitor center. I learned a lot and know you could as well.
