Feedback In Its Finest Form…

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary feedback is defined as: “helpful information or criticism that is given to someone to say what can be done to improve a performance, product, etc.” We as educators give feedback to our students on a daily basis and we are given feedback during our evaluations. What about feedback after an interview? This is the topic of my blog today.

I am an educator who desires to lead in a larger capacity than I do now…hopefully in the role of a building leader. I have had many interviews over the last four years with the same outcome…NO. I am given very little feedback if any and am told the same things over and over again. For example, “we went with someone who had more experience” or “it wasn’t the right fit.” I knew there had to be more to why they didn’t choose me to go on so I investigated.

My most recent interview occurred in the district in which I teach. I emailed back our Human Resources Coordinator who broke the news to me to see if I could get some feedback from him…he graciously said yes. Many thought I was bold to ask for such feedback but as someone who knows the outcome I’d like for my life, I needed to do this. I met with him on Monday of this week and I am so glad I did.

I was reassured that this dream or outcome of mine was obtainable but I needed some fine tuning. I lack the experience that others bring to the table which is not a fault of my own. I need to think like a principal, which is difficult to do when you’ve never walked in those shoes before. We talked about how experienced principals have multiple examples to support their answers to questions while I do not. This is not a fault of mine but rather a stumbling block. He offered to give me a mock interview with immediate feedback. I WILL take him up on this offer even though I know its going to be tough but it will hopefully help me obtain my goal faster. I need to know how experienced principals answer questions so I can change my to reflect this.

I can’t wait until I can write a blog post telling you all how excited I am about landing my first assistant principal or principal position. Stay tuned…
